Before winter approaches, there are so many things you should get ready for around your household. Winterizing your sump pump is one of the many things you should add to your to-do list. While you may not think too much about your sump pump during this season, harsh temperatures can cause damage to your sump pump if not properly maintained.
Sump pumps in winter may require maintenance if they are not prepared before the season approaches. Here are some ways you can prepare it.
Take off the Sump Pump Hose
If your household doesn’t use the sump pump during winter, you should disconnect the hose. This keeps the hose from becoming frozen, which means that the sump pump wouldn’t be of any use. But, many homeowners still rely on their sump pumps in winter. Before the temperatures drop below freezing, you should consider taking the hose extension off. You can put it back on as the temperatures begin to rise again. But, if your hose happens to become frozen, you will need to unplug your sump pump and eliminate any water from the pit just until the hose completely defrosts.
Eliminate Debris
If you have any debris in your sump pump, it can lead to damage. So, the next time you are tending to your sump pump, check for debris nearby that could become stuck in your pump, causing a clog. The accumulation of debris should be taken care of frequently. If you have a clogged sump pit, your basement can end up becoming flooded. This is probably the last thing you want to put up with during the cold winter months. Don’t forget to keep the heat running in the winter since basements tend to get colder which can result in even colder pipes and sump pumps. This is another good way to keep the pipes in your home from freezing.
Schedule Maintenance
Sump pumps should be checked regularly by a professional. Professionals can come out and test your sump pump to make sure it is working properly. They can check for frozen hoses and ejector pumps as well. While it will cost you to have a professional come out, it won’t be nearly as much as if you damaged your sump pump. It is best to take full advantage of professional plumbing services while you can.
